Frequently Asked Questions about the 2025 Summer Swim Program
The Town of Loomis entered into a joint use agreement in 1995 with Del Oro High School for Park Development. Recognizing the use of the pool as vital to the community’s summer activities, the Town entered into a joint use agreement Del Oro High School aquatics Center in 2013. The Summer Swim Program has been operating since with the Town providing lifeguards. In 2025, the Town received short notice about the unavailability of lifeguards, and despite tremendous staff effort, it was unable to find the necessary number of lifeguards to ensure safe operation of the program.
Why didn’t the Town have lifeguards in place?
Historically, the Town has relied on a local organization to train lifeguards that the Town would then hire for the Summer Swim Program. Unfortunately, the Town was not aware that the necessary training did not happen, so the Town scrambled to find replacements.
How many lifeguards does the Summer Swim Program need?
The daily minimum staffing requirement for Summer Swim is three: two team members and a supervisor. However, to be sure to have that number available for each day the Summer Swim Program is open, the Town must have six lifeguards on staff.
How many lifeguards did the Town find?
The Town was able to secure three.
What did the Town do to find lifeguards?
The Town contacted recreation districts, and other swimming programs from Auburn to Sacramento in the effort to find available lifeguards. In addition, the Town placed advertisements through several channels including its website, townwide email blasts and social media.
Why didn’t the Town plan better?
Historically, the Town has had an arrangement with another organization to provide lifeguard training for its participants who the Town later hires. The Town was not aware that the training had not occurred. When the Town did learn, it was too late to arrange the necessary training, so staff tried to find lifeguards elsewhere. Following this experience the Town determined it would take a more direct role in the lifeguard training effort.
Is there any possibility that the Summer Swim will be open in 2025?
Unfortunately, no. Safety at a public swimming pool is paramount. The Town cannot risk not having the appropriate number of lifeguards available to protect the public.
How will the Town make sure the Summer Swim is available in 2026?
The Town is already developing a plan for training interested individuals in lifeguard duties. The plan will require finding a properly certified training provider, recruiting participants, paying for the training, and securing a training facility. Participants who successfully complete the lifeguard training will be offered positions for the 2026 Summer Swim Program.
